My Ashtanga

Ashtanga yoga as a counted led practice for your own mat. The sequence, the vinyasa count, and the breath, exactly as they are taught. Spoken in Sanskrit, or in English while you learn.

Free to download, on iPhone with iOS 17 or later. Sun Salutations, the Standing sequence, and the 108 mala are free to practice.

On your phone

What the practice looks like

Choose the series and the length, then put the phone down. The pose, the breath count, and the drishti are there when you look, and the count carries on when you do not.

The My Ashtanga home screen, showing a Series row with Primary (Yoga Chikitsa) selected, a Practice Length row offering Sun Salutations, Sun and Standing, and Half Primary with time estimates, and cards for Custom Practice and 108 Sun Salutations.
Pick the series and the length. The estimate moves with your own hold setting.
A practice in progress: an illustration of Adho Mukha Svanasana, the posture named in Sanskrit and English, the drishti given as Nabi Chakra at the navel, and a Breath 3 of 5 counter.
Adho Mukha Svanasana, breath three of five, drishti named underneath.
The Custom Practice builder, with Surya A and Surya B round counts, a Standing Sequence toggle, a seated-sequence picker set to Full Seated Sequence, and Backbends and Closing Sequence toggles.
Custom Practice: the Surya rounds, which sections, and how far into the seated sequence.
The Settings screen, with Appearance, Language set to Sanskrit, Cue Intensity, Hold Duration, a Savasana length of 5 minutes, Surya A and B rounds, and Vinyasa Frequency.
Sanskrit or English, hold duration, Savasana, and how often a vinyasa comes.

The traditional method

Ujjayi counted vinyasa by vinyasa, asana in the traditional order, and drishti for every posture.

Begin free

Sun Salutations and the complete Standing sequence are free to practice, for as long as you like.

Make it yours

Set the vinyasa, the hold length, and the rounds, or build your own sequence from the postures.

Tristhana

Counted the way a led class is counted

In a led room the teacher calls the vinyasa number and you move on it. My Ashtanga calls the same numbers. The posture is named, the vinyasa is counted, and the breaths in each hold are counted out loud, so a practice on your own keeps a teacher’s timing.

Ujjayi, counted

Every vinyasa is numbered aloud and every hold is counted breath by breath, in the traditional count rather than against a stopwatch.

Asana, in order

The postures arrive in the order they are taught, with both sides and every lettered variation in its own place. Nothing is silently dropped to save time.

Drishti, named

Where to look is spoken for each posture that is held, so the gaze is part of the practice rather than something you look up afterwards.

Yoga Chikitsa

What is in the Primary Series

The complete first series, in its traditional order. Practice it at Sun Salutations, Half Primary, or Full Primary length, or build your own sequence in Custom Practice. Every posture is written up in the full reference.

The Standing sequence

Padangusthasana and Padahastasana through the Trikonasanas, the Parsvakonasanas, all four Prasarita Padottanasanas, Parsvottanasana, Utthita Hasta Padangusthasana, Ardha Baddha Padmottanasana, Utkatasana, and both Virabhadrasanas. Free to practice.

The Seated sequence

Dandasana through Setu Bandhasana, with Marichyasana A to D, Navasana, Bhujapidasana, Kurmasana and Supta Kurmasana, Garbha Pindasana, and the Konasanas each in their traditional place.

Backbending

Urdhva Dhanurasana where it belongs, between the end of the seated sequence and the start of the closing.

The closing sequence

Salamba Sarvangasana, Halasana, Karnapidasana, Urdhva Padmasana, Pindasana, Matsyasana, Uttana Padasana, Sirsasana, Baddha Padmasana, Yoga Mudrasana, Padmasana, and Utpluthihi. Every practice finishes in Shavasana.

Or your own order

Custom Practice builds a sequence from the standing, seated, backbend, and closing sections, with the Surya count and vinyasa settings you have chosen.

Common questions

More on purchases, restoring them, and managing a subscription is on the support page.

Do I need to know the sequence already?

No. Each posture is named as it arrives, in Sanskrit and in English, and the question mark on the pose card opens a written walkthrough of how to get into it. The app assumes you are practicing alone, not that you have the series memorized.

Is it counted in Sanskrit or in English?

Either. Sanskrit is the default, spoken in one consistent voice throughout rather than read by the phone’s system voice. A full English mode covers the same count and the same posture names while you are learning them. Switch under Settings, Language.

What can I practice without paying?

Surya Namaskara A and B, the complete Standing sequence, and the 108 Sun Salutation mala, with no time limit and no account. The seated sequence, the backbends, the closing, and Custom Practice open with a subscription or the one-time Lifetime purchase, and new subscribers get a seven-day trial.

Does it need a connection?

No. The sequence and every spoken cue are inside the app, so it works in airplane mode. There is no account, no sign-in, and no analytics, and the app sends nothing anywhere. Purchases are handled by Apple.

Is this a led class or a Mysore practice?

It is a led count for a room of one. The vinyasa is called and the breaths are counted the way a led class runs, but the pace, the hold length, and the number of Sun Salutations are yours to set. There is no video and nobody is watching your alignment, so it supports a self practice rather than replacing a teacher.

Which series are included?

Primary, Yoga Chikitsa, is complete today. Intermediate, Nadi Shodhana, and Advanced A and B are being added, and any series added after you buy is included at no additional cost on Monthly, Annual, or Lifetime.
